As a parent, we naturally want the best for our children, especially when it comes to education. Parents who choose Catholic schools for their child’s education do so because of the high academic standards, values-based education and safe and loving school environment that Catholic Schools have to offer.
Catholic Schools are known for their academic excellence. According to the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA), Catholic elementary and secondary school students outperform their public school counterparts. Children who attend Catholic schools have a 99.4% high school graduation rate, compared to the 75% high school graduation rate of public school students. The latest performance data from the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s Department of Catholic Schools found the following:
- Elementary/middle school students consistently score in the top third in the nation on standardized tests
- High School Graduation Rate: 99%
- College Entrance Rate: 98%
- College Scholarship Awards: $234 million, Class of 2012
- Average SAT score: 1580
A catholic school education goes beyond the core curriculum. Values are reinforced in every classroom, promoting healthy self-esteem, confidence, respect, compassion and thought for others. Students in grades Pre-K-through 8 actively participate in service projects in their community throughout the year, teaching them the value and reward of helping others.
In a Catholic school, there is an emphasis on leadership; especially, for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. They are role models for the entire student body. At St. Ursula School, middle school students tutor younger students, through the National Junior Honor Society; serve on the student council; or work as a safety patrol officers. St. Ursula School middle school students also take pride in reading to the Kindergarten and Pre-K students and assisting them at church. The emphasis on leadership gives our middle school students a sense of pride and responsibility that prepares them to be successful in high school and beyond.
